'smartctl' is the command line tool to get info and control the S.M.A.R.T. capable drive. With modern disk drives info is gather and stored about the status of the disk.  The system that monitors the disk and track this info is called "S.M.A.R.T.", which stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology" Note, all examples are from Ubuntu (either 6.06 or 7.04) unless explicitly stated otherwise. On Ubuntu, the config file is /etc/smartd.conf you probably do not need to edit anything in there unless if you something non-standard.  By default smartd is configed to look for any drives and monitor them. The primary tools to monitor S.M.A.R.T. capiable disk drives are the smartmontools, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/.These are comprised of two main tools, smartctl and smartd.  smartctl is used to access and set S.M.A.R.T. info on the drives.  The smartd tools is a daemon that run to continuely monitor the status of your drive and report/email that. S.M.A.R.T. is implemented by most (all ?) drive manufactures.  Some motherboards do enable and check this info also to be able to warn the users of possible disk failure.Some drive have additional information gathered by the S.M.A.R.T. firmware.  So the info gathered, relative use and accuracy varies by manufacture, drive, and model. Need packages sudo apt-get install kvm qemu Install the kernel module For AMD processors sudo modprobe kvm-amd For Intel processors sudo modprobe kvm-intel Some machines have the VM extension of the CPU turned off in bios. Linux should tell you this in a system message (available via dmesg)when you try and load the kernel module.

A couple of notes from the meeting.     There is a module Webmin module ( http://www.webmin.com/standard.html ) that gives smart status using smartmontools.     The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T page has a very useful description for all the SMART Attributes.
