    History of the shell.

     

    I am not sure of the exact orgins of the shell, I beleieve shell orginiated with the Unix system.


    The first shell I worked with was the Bourne shell on Unix System V R3 back in 1986.

     

    There have been may other shells,,

    Z Shell (zsh; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_shell)

    C Shell (csh or tcsh; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_shell)

    Bourne Shell

    Bash (The Born Again SHell)

     

    and many more I don't remember...

     

    Today the most common shell is the bash shell.  Bash was released in 1989 for the GNU Project. One reason it is so popular is that it is packaged with most Linux systems.
